North Shore Photography offers original and reproductions of 8 x 10 inch and larger hand printed black and white pictures on Ilford 'Pearl' surface or Kodak (semi-matte) photographic silver halide/gelatin paper. Our digital color prints are printed on Epson Matte 9 mil paper using an Epson Stylus Photo six color printer.

All prints are shrinkwrapped, cropped, mounted on 8 x 10 inch matt backing board, and have caption information on the back.

The black and whites shot by Bill Romerhaus are signed and dated on the front. The hand colored black and whites are printed digitally from scans of the original copy transparency, negative, or print. Hand color artists who have contributed their talents are Malia McNamara, Joy Dawn, Deborah Marie, and Bill Romerhaus.

All of the prints offered are very popular among tourists visiting, local people living in Hawaii, and kama'aina now living in other parts of the world.

The master catalog list of more than 700 historic black and white, hand colored, digital color, Hawaiiana, and nostalgic images features catalog numbers and text descriptions of photographs from the 1860's to the late 1990's. Topics cover many subjects.

Click on the master catalog sub lists to see individual image descriptions and catalog numbers. We are presently in the process of updating the catalog so that you can click on a text listing or a thumbnail image to see a sample of any image. It will take a few years, however, as we are still editing, scanning, filing negatives, and printing masters, a task that has already taken several years. Eventually we'll have thumbnails for all images.

We also now feature a "Favorites" page that has samples of 100+ of some of the most popular photos if you don't want to browse thru the catalog text listings. Just click on the image to see a larger size. Please be aware that the color images are much clearer than they appear to be on the computer screen. If you don't see an image in the 'Favorites' section that you want to look at you may request a sample. We plan to add more images periodically to this section.

TO SEE SAMPLES: For requests to view images that are not available as thumbnails or 'Favorites' our previous policy will remain in effect: To see any image from the catalog text listing you can request a sample low resolution 8 x 10 inch black and white computer or zerox print for $1.00 each. This includes postage. Most libraries and musuems charge a higher fee.

Sorry, we are not set up nor have the time to answer e-mail requests to send image samples by e-mail. It usually takes a few extra days to process sample orders.

If you want to request samples please first send an e-mail letting us know. You can send payment for samples by Pay Pal or by U.S. Mail. Total up the amount for copies using the prices mentioned above. Write down the catalog numbers and photo descriptions on a piece of paper if you are mailing payment or include this information in your e-mail. Make sure you include your mailing address. Then send electronic payment via Pay Pal to:
northshorephoto@hawaii.rr.com

If you want to mail a check or money order to our mailing address (see "Contact Us" in the menu above for mailing address). Be sure to include your complete mailing address, payment, and e-mail address. If paying by check or money order make payable to: North Shore Photo. Copies are usually sent out within 7 days by first class mail after we receive your request with payment.

PAYMENT: We now are able to accept credit cards using the Pay Pal secure online purchasing service. You can e-mail your order with catalog numbers and photo description. We'll give you a total price for items you have requested and send you a Pay Pal invoice via e-mail. You pay them, its fast, secure, and easy with great documentation. When we receive notification from Pay Pal that payment has been made, you'll receive a confirmation e-mail with shipment date from us.

We prefer using Pay Pal for several reasons. Just like everyone else we're cautious about using credit cards over the internet. We've never had one problem or mistake buying or selling with them. They provide excellent records of transactions available to the buyer and seller. And the best part is that your order is usually sent the next day after payment confirmation is received.

***PLEASE CONTACT US AT northshorephoto@hawaii.rr.com TO PLACE AN ORDER USING PAY PAL OR IF YOU WANT TO PAY BY MAIL WITH A CHECK OR MONEY ORDER.

PRINT PRICES: Price for each 8 x 10 is $10.00 plus $3.00 shipping and handling charges. Shipping discounts are available for multiple purchases. See 'Shipping' below.

PRINT DETAILS: Matt backing board colors, borders, and cropping may vary and may not be exactly the same as the samples. Although the photos are printed on 8 x10 inch paper the actual image may be trimmed and cropped to 7 x 9 inch (35mm full frame format) or odd sizes depending on the format of the original print. When they are attached to the single matt board you will be able to see the color of the board around the margins of the print. It usually makes the print look like there is a frame or border at the edges.

If you don't like the margin color you can always use the matt board the cropped photo is mounted on as a backing board and purchase a larger custom cut matt of your own liking (11 X 14 OR 16 X 20 inch) from a frame shop. They look pretty good that way too. Sorry, because of limited colors in stock, no matt color choices. However, if you don't like the color you can return for a different one available. We've never had any complaints.

LARGER PRINTS & SIZES: The basic print sizes we offer are 8x10 inch prints on semi-matte paper. Black and white prints up to 16 x 20 inch can be done by hand in our dark room, anything larger has to be sent out. The digital color prints can also be enlarged and printed to almost any size. With a new partnership we are able to process digital orders of any photos we offer printed on a variety of papers in sepia, color, or black and white, to sizes up to 40 x 60 inch, and have them shipped directly from the printer to you. This decreases turnaround time. We can also have them printed to ANY larger size, quotes available (serious inquiries only).

Please contact us for estimates before ordering custom sizes. For special or large volume orders it is best to always e-mail, call, or write to find out prices, if the image is in stock, and how long it will take to process, and ship the prints. Custom orders may take up to 2-4+ weeks to prepare.

PRICES FOR LARGER AND CUSTOM BLACK AND WHITE PRINTS:
*11 X 14 inch non-mounted prints are $40.00 each
*16 x 20 inch non-mounted prints are $100.00 each

PRICES FOR LARGER DIGITAL PRINTS: We are presently in the process of setting up a price list for larger prints and poster sizes. Please call for prices, until we include new ones on this page.

SHIPPING: The most economical way to ship prints from Hawaii is by First Class or Priority Mail (3-7 days normally), however 2nd day Express Mail (pretty expensive, 1-2 days), Fed-Ex, and UPS shipments can be charged to your account. The postage charge for 1-3 shrink wrapped 8 x 10's is $3.00. For 4-10 prints (which fit in a flat rate Priority Mail envelope) its $5.00 including shipment confirmation receipt. Larger orders and prints are shipped in mailing tubes and boxes and prices vary.

Please inquire if you have any questions. We will send you a confirmation e-mail when we receive your order and payment, including shipping date. A delivery confirmation number will be included on Priority Mail shipments. The shipping and handling charge is not just for postage, it also includes labels, shrink wrap, packaging, and handling costs etc.

PRINT QUALITY: Please realize that most of the older black and white images (1880's thru 1960's) were copied from originals or duplicates. Some originals may have been oddly shaped so we crop the reproductions to make them look the best. There may be marks, scratches, cracks, glare, dust marks, light and dark spots, poor exposure, etc. Because the Black and Whites (up to 16x20") are processed and printed by hand and not on a digital computer program, they are mostly printed as copied. When possible, the prints are dodged, burned, and contrast corrected however. Some may look better than the originals.

Please be aware that you can't see minor dust marks and print imperfections on the smaller photos you see on your computer screen. This includes some of the older surfing photos from the 60's and 70's. Some of the larger digital prints from our digital files are slowly being corrected for imperfections and many of the flaws have been edited, tonal ranges have been enhanced, etc.

Most of the color and black and whites images shot by Bill Romerhaus (1965 - present) are usually of much better quality because we retain original negatives, transparencies, and digital files. The digital images are printed on Epson Matte paper and should last 10-25 years from fading if protected properly. The black and white prints should last 100 years with optimal storage conditions. See the information on the back of prints for optimal preservation and display instructions.

The digital color prints are usually scanned from a 35mm color transparency or from a flatbed scan of an original print. They will look grainier and 'noisier' than a traditional photograph up close. If you are a perfectionist please realize these are not Gicl'ee or Cibachrome quality for the price you are paying. You can tell these are digital prints. When viewing them if you step back a foot or two they will look like traditional photos. They will still project the artistic feeling and sharpness of the original image. They sell very well at our point of purchase displays at retail outlets here in Hawaii.

PHOTO RIGHTS: Any of the photos listed on the web site or in the catalog can't be used for commercial or advertising purposes with out proper credit/permission. Normally: Photo Courtesy: Hawaii State Archives: Photographer: (name) or Unknown. All images with © Bill Romerhaus, must have a release from North Shore Photography before using for any commercial purposes including editorial usage.

Standard professional rates will be applied and invoiced to you or your business if any images are requested to be used for publishing, product promotion, advertising, or other commercial uses. Releases and rates can be obtained by contacting North Shore Photography: "Contact Us" before use.

All of the older images are obtained from various public collections considered to be 'public domain' or from private collections that we have been granted exclusive rights to print and/or not covered by copyright laws or usage fees. Many of the older photos were printed and sold in quantity by the original photographers, many of whom are unknown, to many different individuals, and can be found in many public and private collections. We have found that it is very rare that only one original of the more popular images were made.

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED: ****PLEASE NOTE: Some of the surfing and other photos may require releases from surfers or subjects if used for advertising a product or service, many have already been published and sold in surfing magazines or other publications and are mearly reprints of those photos, taken in a public place. Because they have previously been published we accept no liability. For all purposes those images are considered as editorial, or artistic, and are being sold not as a promotion of the subject or surfer, but rather as historical images.

All rights are reserved for all images found in our catalog and can't be copied from this site or duplicated without our written permission. We cannot transfer rights or permission to third parties to reprint, resell, or use many of these photos for commercial purposes. Please inquire, as it depends on the photo, if you want usage permission or releases.

PHOTO INFORMATION AND CAPTIONS: We try to get accurate information about the dates, photographers, caption, and location of all the images in the catalog. It is not our intent to provide inaccurate caption information. Many times, however, the information about or written on the original source may be inaccurate or lost, so if you find errors or have information to add please let us know.

We are not historical experts on every topic and photo listed on this site, nor claim to be. It takes a lot of time to research the several thousand images in the collection, and many times sources provide conflicting, or incomplete information. We welcome your corrections and additional information to provide complete and accurate dates, names, photographer, or locations, to provide accurate historical captions for any of the images we offer.

One of the reasons we are offering these images for reasonable prices is to perpetuate the history and culture of Hawaii to visitors and kama'aina at a price that ordinary people can afford. In our own way we feel we our doing a small part in contributing to keeping the spirit of 'Aloha' and the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands alive in the minds of people all over the world. If any of these photos have captured your heart with memories of Hawaii then we have done our job.

This web site is a ongoing lifetime project as we have thousands of nostalgic, scenic, and surfing images in our files and will be continually adding images and updating the site periodically. Our goal is to eventually have all images on the web site in a 'click thumbnail to see a larger image' format. Please contact us if you have any questions, suggestions, or are looking for images that are not listed.

Thank you for accessing our site,
MAHALO AND ALOHA FROM HAWAII!
